Cecile's Pumpkin Roll

Every fall, Grandma Cecile makes her famous, delicious pumpkin roll. And every fall, we love being on the receiving end. Before I was married, I was thankful to live next door to Grandma so I could enjoy this scrumptious treat often. Now, whenever I have a chance to make this, I do - and think of Grandma's wonderful pumpkin goodness.                             ~Julie

CECILE'S PUMPKIN ROLL

SisterSurveySays: Baby Shower Ideas

(c) Microsoft 2013
And here's part 2 of our shower ideas posts (click here for part 1 on Wedding Showers). Obviously there's no set "season" for baby showers, but for whatever reason, we at least seem to encounter more showers in the summertime. So hopefully these ideas will help if you are looking for some new or more helpful ways to shower your next Mom-to-be (MTB).

(c) Amazon.com
CHANGING PAD CLUTCH - Jill received one of these for her little guy and absolutely loves it. Not only does it unfold into a changing pad, but the end pocket is large enough for diapers, wipes, and even a few tubes of rash cream. The clutch is also small enough, when folded, to fit into a medium-to-large purse as well as a diaper bag. If you don't need a changing pad, I'm sure Jill would be happy to make you a simple diaper & wipes case from her etsy shop. :-)

Ever seen this before? That's right, it's
one of CreativeSeams' caddies.
Great for diaper holding.
ORGANIZING CADDY OR SMALL TOY BIN FULL OF DIAPERS/WIPES - We know. Diapers are not nearly as cute or interesting as those little baby outfits (with the matching jackets and hats). But (now that we're all moms) we also know that nobody is going to complain about having too many diapers - they do all eventually get used up. So if you're leaning towards the practical side, why not dress it up a bit? You can fill a really cute caddy (like this one here) with these essentials. And then maybe you'll still get the "awwww. how cute!" exclamation that accompanies that adorable Carter's outfit.

BABY SHOES WITH A GIFT CARD - Of course a gift card can always be a huge blessing to a MTB. So if you want a fun way to "dress it up" a little bit (and give the MTB something to open besides a card), why not attach it to a pair of shoes? Cute shoes will also qualify you for the "awwww" factor. Our newest mom, Julie, loves to do this. And if you're wondering if babies even need shoes before they're walking, the answer is YES! They help hold their socks on! (So now you know. Practical AND visual).

3-year-old trying out his
new towel from Aunt Joanne
HOMEMADE HOODED TOWELS - We mentioned this idea with our Holiday Gift Guide, but the idea originated for us when Joanne was given one of these hooded towels at her baby shower. She has since made them for the rest of our children, and we all agree: we LOVE them! I've personally used them on both my 6-month-old and my 3-year old. If you would rather put a personal touch and have the time to make these (and they don't take long), they really do make great gifts. (Tutorial for making these found here.)

Enjoying our first trip to the American Girl store -
Moby Wrap included (for both of our comforts).

MOBY WRAP - I can't conclude a post on Baby shower gifts without a plug for the Moby wrap. I realize there are a number of "carrier" and sling options out there - and the moby wrap is not necessarily the cheapest or easiest option to slip on. HOWEVER, I have yet to meet someone who owns a moby wrap and DOESN'T like it. So now, if I can go in together on a gift for someone (if the MTB doesn't already have one), I try to get her a moby. You can usually find the best deal for them here on Amazon.com (in a plethora of colors too). They are fantastic for getting fussy babies to sleep or calmed down. And they are by far the best feeling on the back (something about being ergonomical, etc.). Okay, advertisement over.

(c) carseatcanopy.com
CARSEAT COVER/BOPPY PILLOW/NURSING COVER - I'm not sure of the overall company name, but whoever they are, you can get coupon codes regularly for free carseat covers, boppy pillows & covers, and nursing covers. Many of these codes are in the Pregnancy magazines in your doctor's office. And once you purchase one, they start emailing you more codes for other items. The catch is that you have to pay shipping, which is usually around $12. But that's not a bad deal for these very handy items. (Note: right now, almost every new mom in our church has a Carseat Canopy). So to get you started, here's a code [MOTHERHOOD13] I have for a Carseat Cover (which should lead you to other free things if you order, etc.). I have these and have kept ordering them to use as gifts for people. They really are great! Lots of gender-neutral colors & designs.

That's all for now. We'd love to hear some of your ideas as well, so feel free to comment and add to the creativity.

Christmas Goodies for All

For the Albright family, Christmas is always a special time of year - as we celebrate our Savior who came as a baby to die for our sins and enjoy the special times that we can have together with family. Unfortunately, this year was a little different for many of us, as we were not able to have a large "family gathering." But no matter if we are together or not, there is always one thing that each of us greatly enjoys doing during this time of year - baking! This year we each made different Christmas treats - some were for our own consumption, and some were for others to enjoy. So for our readers' benefit, here is a comprehensive list (complete with recipes) of some of the baking that we did this year.

Joanne's Baking List:
Cinnamon Rolls (from The Pioneer Woman)
Joanne purchased pie tins from the dollar store, and placed 8 rolls in each tin. She and her family gave them as gifts for their neighbors.

She also used the following recipes for her family and friends:

Sarah's Baking List:

Megan's Baking List:
For her Christmas get-togethers, Megan used this Fruit Salsa with Stacy's Cinnamon and Sugar Pita Chips (found at most grocery stores).

She also received the following ingredients as a Christmas gift and was able to use the idea for a family Christmas meal:
Italian Dressing Seasoning, Brown Gravy Mix, Onion Soup Mix

Place a 2-4 lb. beef roast, some carrots and potatoes in a crock pot and topped with the ingredients and one cup of water. Cooked on High for 4-5 hours or low for 8-10 hours. The sauce is thicker, so additional gravy is not needed.

Jill's Baking List:
Jill individually wrapped each ball in wax paper, and placed in a paper box for gifts.

Julie's Baking List:
Julie placed several cups of Puppy Chow in a plastic bag and placed in a nice glass container for gifts.

We hope you enjoyed these recipe ideas - and even though the holidays are over, hopefully they can help inspire some cooking ideas or other hospitality ventures.

SANC-TI-FI-CA-TION

Have you ever questioned in your heart our Sovereign Lord for circumstances He has brought into your life?  Maybe you can truthfully say, "no" to this question; however, In the past 4 months I have had to answer this question with a big, fat "YES!"

I am blessed with an amazing family.  My parents taught me God's Word and I went to a Christian school and college.  Shouldn't I know not to question God and know how to react when God brings uncomfortable trials into my life?  In my miniscule brain, I know what sanctification is, but I don't think it had really touched my heart until God brought a large trial into my life.  I had understood that growing was when you went to church and read your Bible and prayed.  While reading your Bible and going to church are good things, and you do grow through those things, God can use anything to grow and stretch you, including trials.

The following is a timeline of events that God brought into my life this fall, immediately following my wedding:

August 27: I was experiencing extreme pain in my lower back.

August 28: The pain in my back progressed and I couldn't do anything to get comfortable.

August 29: I couldn't get out of bed and could barely walk.  The pain was so excruciaiting that my husband and I finally decided to go on an adventure to the ER in Michigan where we were supposed to be packing up my stuff to move.  After a few hours of groaning in the waiting room, I was able to see a doctor.  I had a few tests done and was able to eventually have pain medicine and then started to feel comfortable.  The doctor came in and said, "You have a UTI, kidney infection, and we found a 3 cm 'mass' on your kidney."  Once the doctor left, my mind began racing . . . "this is not supposed to happen to you when you first get married; this is supposed to happen to old people, what even is a 'mass?'; do I have cancer?; we don't have money for this; I am moving far away where I don't know anybody and now I have health problems; isn't your kidney a major port of your body?; am I going to have to have a transplant and go on dialysis?"  I stayed overnight in the hospital and was sent home the next day with pain medicine and antibiotics.

September 1: My husband and I began our journey out to Colorado.  After being on antibiotics for a few days, I began to feel much better.  I visited several doctors to try and figure out what the next step was in taking care of the mass on my kidney.  I saw a urologist who explained in detail everything about the kidney and explained all the possibilities of what the 'mass' could be.  One possibility was the big dreaded "C" word - cancer.  I always thought that cancer is what happens to other people, not me.  The doctor explained that the location of the 'mass ' was not in a good place and that they were going to have to remove the entire kidney.  I needed a few more tests done before my surgery was going to be scheduled.  When we left that appointment, I sat in the car and bawled.  I felt as if my life was at a stand still and I thought, "GOD, WHY???"  Over the next few days God began to grow me in ways I couldn't see.  I was reminded of Isaiah 55:8-9 "For my thoughts are not your thought, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."  God's way is always better than my way even if it is cancer, or you can fill in the blank.  God's way is always better than my way even if it is _________.

September 30: I went in to have a CT Scan to check on the 'mass'.  This test was going to be the map for the surgery.  I had an appointment scheduled to meet with the doctor to go over the results of this test and talk more details about the sugery.

October 4: I was driving and my phone went off.  The caller ID said "Dr."  I immediately had a huge pit in my stomach, and thought, "The tumor is way bigger, and I'm going to have to have surgery tomorrow."  I answered the phone and instead the doctor said, "Hey, I just wanted you to know that I looked athte results of the CT Scan and your 'mass' has shrunk by at least 50%.  You need to go back on antibiotics to try to shrink the rest of the 'mass'. "  My heart was filled with joy and excitement, but also rebuke.  I doubted God.  I had prayed about my kidney situation many times, but I never really believed in my heart that God would make this situation better.  God once again demonatrated His grace to me.

November 15: I went and had a follow-up ultrasound done on my kidney to check on the 'mass'.

November 16: I went to the doctor to see the results of the ultra sound.  The doctor came in and said, "You are healed.  The mass is gone, and your kidney is working fine."  No words could come out of my mouth.  I was greatly overwhelmed.  God knew before I was even born that He would allow me to have medical problems, so that I could learn that His way is best and He is Sovereign.

God has changed me and continues to stretch and challenge me in several different areas.  I am so grateful to God for allowing me to taste the goodness and sovereignty of God.  Although I have never understood that God could use my health as a means for sanctification, He has, and it is all for His glory.  There are no words to express how grateful I am to all the poeple who interceded for me, many that I don't even know.  God may allow something of this magnitude to occur again, and if He should I don't have to understand why.  I can rest assured that His way is perfect!

Fall Favorites: Julie's Fiesta Chicken

(c) Microsoft Office
This past year, I got to live with Megan’s parents for a couple months. (We like to refer to each other as "nothing-in-laws" - related in circumstance and spirit, just not really on paper.). During that time, I enjoyed a few wonderfully simple, yet delicious recipes - and "Fiesta Chicken" is one of my favorites. I have now, as a newlywed, made this recipe a few times for company and it's been a huge hit every time. It does utilize one of our "fall" elements (corn), so that's why we're sharing it. I hope you can enjoy it too!

We Love Breakfast!

One of the great things about being a part of the Sisterhood is finding things in common - and a love of breakfast food is definitely one of those common things. So here are a couple of great breakfast ideas - with a twist.

Croissant French Toast - by Megan

Those of us who married into the Albright Fam (ie. Sarah and I) also married into a crazy, breakfast-loving group of eaters (particularly the men). That would explain why Cracker Barrel is always the restaurant of choice when we go out to eat. We all love nothing better than breakfast for supper. Or lunch. Or whenever. (I was actually surprised a few weeks ago when I went out with a group  to Cracker Barrel and discovered that there ARE people out there who actually order from the non-breakfast menu at Cracker Barrel. Weird.) Well, my husband, Joel, only ever gets one thing at C.B. - the "Momma's French Toast Breakfast." He LOVES french toast - passionately. So, when I saw this grand-prize-winning french toast recipe in an old Taste of Home magazine, I couldn't resist trying it.

When I first tried it, I did all the parts of the recipe: the french-toasted croissants, the vanilla ice cream sauce, and the raspberry sauce - all of which were incredible. However, I noticed that it was really only the females that enjoyed experimenting with the vanilla and raspberry sauces on their french toast. The guys just wanted to pile on the butter and maple syrup. So, if you're going to make this for a group of guys (or a family of mostly males), I would recommend just doing the french toast. (This also works really well if you have a few leftover croissants from making sandwiches with them and don't want them to go bad.) However, if you're going to have a "fellowship of female friends," then definitely try out the raspberry & vanilla sauces (I'd also recommend doubling the raspberry sauce, since it ran out quickly). I made this recipe again for my sister's bridal brunch, and it was a big hit. Enjoy!

Bridal Brunch = good breakfast food.

Vanilla Sauce:
  • 1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 C. whipping cream
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
In a bowl, combine flour, egg yolks and vanilla; set aside. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the whipping cream and sugar to a boil; remove from the heat. Stir a small amount of hot cream into egg yolk mixture; return all to the pan, stirring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in ice cream until melted. Set aside.

Raspberry Sauce
  • 2 C. unsweetened raspberries (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
Combine raspberries and sugar in a saucepan. Simmer, uncovered, for 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat, and set aside.

French Toast:
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 croissants (split)
  • 2 Tbsps. butter or margarine
In a shallow bowl, beat eggs. Dip both sides of croissants in egg mixtures. On a griddle, brown croissants on both sides in butter. Serve with vanilla and berry sauces.

Julie's bakin' bacon
Bakin' Bacon - by Julie

My husband, David, and I also love breakfast food. However, one of the problems we’ve discovered with cooking lots of breakfast food is cleaning the messy pans afterward. My sister, who has been cooking for a lot longer than I have, started to bake her bacon in the oven, rather than fry it on the stove top - and let me just tell you, the results are wonderful! All you have to do is cover a cookie sheet with tin foil and place the bacon onto it . With the oven at 400 degrees, bake for about 10-15 minutes or until done to your liking. (Some like it really crispy and some don’t.) Then, for clean-up, all you have to do is roll up the tin foil and throw it away. The oven bakes the bacon nice, straight, and even too.

Note: This same concept will also work with pepperoni. Baking the pepperoni prior to assembling your pizza removes much of the grease and makes them crispy. Pepperoni only takes about 8 minutes at 350 degrees.

Simple Decorating Tips for Less

Have you ever seen something in a store that is breathtakingly beautiful? You pick it up with delight, imagining the exact spot and place you will use it in your home. With great hope in your heart, you turn it over, looking for that magical clearance sticker - and in less than a second, your dream of using the item is suddenly squelched because you clearly have expensive taste and simply can’t afford it. Well, if that is you, maybe we are twins. This, my friends, happens to me on a regular basis and way too often, but I have had to learn to use my imagination and creative side of my brain to create "the look for less."

Having a degree in interior design, I absolutely LOVE to design and make unique pieces for my home - and there are many different stores and magazines that inspire me to recreate artsy goodness. One of my favorite stores happens to be Anthropologie. The fashion, bedding, and décor is simply heaven for outside-the-box thinkers. Recently, I was in the store looking and getting some inspiration, and I came across some of these 3-D letters that had different patterns all over them. I loved these letters, but they were a little out of my price range, ($14 for a 7" letter). So, I just tucked that concept away for a later  time.

The 'R' at the wedding
Well, I recently got married and used a lot of different 'Rs' for décor, because my new last name begins with ‘R.’ I had purchased a giant ‘R’ at my local craft store (using a 50% off 1 item coupon, resulting in only paying $5 for a 2' 3-D ‘R’) and painted it to match my wedding. There was just one little problem: after the wedding, the color of the ‘R’ and my living room clashed. So, I sat and thought about what I could do to help the ‘R’ belong in my living room. Suddenly, I was inspired with the idea at Anthropologie. I decided to use different patterns to cover the ‘R’ and make it fit in perfectly with the décor of my house. Scrapbook paper is a fabulous thing to use on a tight budget. I went again to my local craft store and bought 12 pieces of scrapbook paper (which were on sale) and I paid a total of $2. Then, I had to come up with how to adhere the paper to the giant ‘R’; and I immediately turned to a great standby - Mod Podge! (This is a great supply to have if you do any kind of crafty stuff.)

The 'R' post-Mod Podge
Once I had my supplies all collected, I was able to begin creating the ‘R’ I had envisioned. Please keep in mind that this concept doesn’t have to be strictly for covering letters. You can also do this with coasters, coffee tables, canvasses, gift boxes, letters spelling an entire name, etc. With a small budget, being resourceful is always a great idea - and the total cost of this project was only $8. I hope this helps you see where you can also get inspired by other ideas and concepts - and save too!

COVERING LETTER DIRECTIONS:
  1. Gather all materials: 3-D letter, scrapbook paper (different coordinating patterns), Mod Podge glue, and a sponge brush.
  2. Begin ripping the scrapbook paper into different large strips.
  3. Using the brush, place the glue onto the object and to the paper strip; then begin placing the paper flat onto the object and slightly overlap the different patterns and pieces. (NOTE: Don’t use too much glue or it will all bubble up. It also works best to smooth out the paper or bubbles will form.)
  4. Once all the paper is completely covering the entire letter and glued onto the letter, use the brush to spread a little extra glue all over the top of the paper, which will seal the letter and give it a great smoothed texture.
  5. After letting it dry for a few hours, get your 'R' and go find that perfect spot - and enjoy your look for less!
