One way to have an inexpensive but fun (and interesting) get-together with friends is to have a Secret Dollar Menu Activity. The idea is that everyone helps to bring either a part of the dinner or an ingredient used in the meal. However, the catch is that no one is allowed to spend more than $2 for the item they bring - and they also cannot tell the other people attending what they are bringing.
Then, based on what everyone brings to the dinner, you (the hostess) will create a meal. A variation that you could do, is that the hostess can provide a protein (ie. chicken, pork, beef) for the meal - but that protein is also to be a secret.
So have fun creating a meal on the spot! Below are some pictures from a secret dollar menu party.
